Debut with Coed School
Co-ed School (남녀 공학) was the first co-ed group in the K-pop music scene. The name Co-ed School means that the group is a school with mixed members (mixed school). The group consisted of 10 members, six boys (Taewoon, Sungmin, Jungwoo, Kwanghaeng, Kang-ho, and Noori) and four girls (Sumi, Hyoyoung, Hyewon, and Chanmi). They debuted under Core Contents Media (later changed the name to MBK Entertainment), on September 27th, 2010, with their debut song “Too Late” which was considered quite attractive because they offered a fresh concept in the midst of the boy group-girl group dichotomy. Although in the end, the group was highly underrated. In the group, Sungmin filled the position as the lead vocalist and the main rapper.
“Damn Co-Ed School was great until they had disbanded. It’s a horrible irony that Co-Ed School ended up just like all other mixed-gender groups. If they had been under S.M. Entertainment (or any of the big three) they probably would have stuck together and been more successful. Instead of being split into subgroups which became independent. Just my opinion,” one user commented on their video. “They had the potential to be big, their company didn’t know how to manage them well, they lost members, went with their sub-units and now what?” another user added. “I used to really like them! Before this group disbanded. 🙁 They had great songs, one of which is this. The group’s concept was always interesting to me. There aren’t a lot of co-ed groups in KPOP and there should be more since Co-Ed makes it look really good. This group had so much potential and I don’t doubt they’ll be one of the hottest and most iconic groups in the industry had they not separated ways,” added another user. Although the group didn’t win anything for their debut, their concept was really refreshing. Not until one month after, they returned with their second single “Bbiribbom Bberibbom” featuring T-Ara’s Ham Eun-jung. And another ballad song within the same year titled “I Love A Thousand Times.” The MV for the song was made on October 11th, 2010, and features T-ara member Ham Eun-jeong. This video, together with the MV for the ballad song “Nae Simjangeul Ttwige Haneun Mar” was released on October 18th, 2010. The single itself was released on October 19th, and they performed “Bbiribom Bberibbom” for the first time the following day on Mnet’s M! Countdown.
The group released their first mini-album within the same year, Something That Is Cheerful and Fresh, on October 28th, 2010. This album includes the various remixes and original versions of the three previously released songs. Core Contents Media stated that the album had been pre-ordered by 50,000 people and there have been increases in productions of the albums and it sold 47,000 copies despite the intention to limit it to 20,000 copies. It showed that the group had a lot of potentials, had the management managed them better.
Active As A SPEED Member
While Co-ed School was intended to be a mixed-member group, the group members were also divided into two sub-groups: an all-female group, F-ve Dolls (2011), and an all-male group, Speed (2012). Speed was a South Korean boy band under the label MBK Entertainment (previously known as Core Contents Media). This group consisted of seven members, namely Taewoon, Jungwoo, Yoohwan, Taeha, Jongkook, Sejun, Sungmin. Previously, Speed was a subunit of Co-Ed School that debuted in 2010. Co-Ed School had two subunits, namely Speed and 5Dolls. However, CCM/MBK Entertainment announced that there are no plans to merge Speed and 5Dolls again because they have become a girl group/boy band separately so Co-Ed School had to disband in mid-2013, and thus, Speed became an independent group. Speed officially debuted on January 15th, 2013, with a debut album titled Superior Speed and “It’s Over” as the lead track.
In January 2015, Speed was rumored to be adding two new members for their upcoming comeback bringing the number of members to nine. But on March 25th, 2016, a shocking piece of news came from the Leader (Taewoon). He left Speed due to his solo career and entered the Show Me the Money competition on Mnet. After Taewoon’s departure, Speed added a new member named KI-O. Then the group officially made their comeback with KI-O through the song “What U” from the second mini-album SPEED ON, which was released on June 1st, 2015. This comeback was their last comeback before their disbandment.
Disbandment and Future Activity
Both Co-ed School and F-ve Dolls are unfortunately disbanded. In the middle of 2013, it was announced that Co-Ed School would no longer be performing together. Instead, they would be split and become independent ensembles through their two subunits: F-ve Dolls and SPEED. After their last comeback in 2015, it was assumed that the group went through the disbandment after MBK Entertainment (previously Core Contents Media) removed the information of the group from their official website. Although there hasn’t been any official statement made by the agency, all the members were reportedly leaving the company. Sungmin himself had signed a new contract with the talent agency Star Camp 202 to pursue his acting career on June 26th, 2016. Since then, he has made an appearance as the supporting character named Han Duk-soo in KBS2’s School 2017 in July 2017. He also acted in the SBS drama Reunited Worlds, and the 2018 MBC drama Risky Love as Min-gi. Currently, he is enlisted in the military since July 2019 as revealed by his sister, IZ*ONE’s Choi Yena. He can be reached through his social media, Instagram. So, those are all the things that you need to know regarding the former member of Co-Ed School and Speed, Choi Sungmin!
